Garter Tab mini class

Start your top down shawls at the back of the neck without a true cast-on! The garter tab beginning incorporates the garter edging of your shawl while giving you a spot to start the double increases. Refinements make the tab easier to work and better integrated with the typical yarn-over increase lines.

Skill level is intermediate.
Knowledge of provisional cast-on is advantageous but not required.

Maximum 20 students.

mini workshop

Students receive a handout in booklet form.

No materials fee.

No homework.

Supplies:
  • class yarn (smooth, non-splitting, light or bright or medium color)
  • needles to work that yarn (non-slippery dpns are helpful)
  • waste yarn for vertical lifelines & provisional cast-on
  • split-ring stitch markers or coil-less safety pins optional but helpful

I bring with me a set of six swatches showing variations on how to work the garter tab.

No special needs for the room set up. A whiteboard or flip chart is nice to have but not need to have. Room set-up should be tables and chairs either facing forward or in a U-shape.

This is a core technique from “Waste Not: Shawls.”
