Most people have time to do this in class or waiting for class to start. If you are a slower knitter or prefer not to be rushed, you can cast on ahead of time. You’ll need to do this eventually, but doing it ahead of time is optional.
Cast on 20 stitches in the round and knit a few rounds in stockinette using double-pointed needles.
