Exponent, Part 2

The pattern for Exponent alternates plain rounds of 1×1 ribbing with rounds of Y-increases. The Y-increase is a knitting heresy. Normally, you can't knit into the same stitch twice. If you try it, you will discover that all you do is add a wrap, making the stitch taller but not making more stitches. Versa lace is ribbing based. Instead of having a single stitch, you have a pair of stitches. This means you can work knit 1, purl 1, then back up and work knit 1, purl 1 in the same stitches again. As you can see in the detail photograph, the effect looks like two stitches coming out of one. And they are bilaterally symmetrical, meaning there is no left-leaning or right-leaning version of this. I have not yet put in the time exploring, but I suspect there may be some crochet maneuvers that can be mimicked in knitting using this technique.

A Double Increase and Another Knitting Heresy

I made another reversible lace video. This time, I'm demonstrating the knit, yarn over, knit into the same stitch double increase. In reversible lace, you'll substitute knit-purl, double yarn over, then knit and purl again in the same stitch pair. The maneuver is a little fiddly, but it does get easier with practice. Knit 1, paying attention to where the left shoulder of the mother knit stitch is. Purl, but do not drop the mother purl stitch off the left needle. Bring the left needle tip up behind and into the shoulder of the mother knit stitch. Double yarn over. Put the right needle in "through the back of the loop" position and knit the shoulder. Purl again, but this time drop the old stitch off the left needle. Working out how to do this maneuver made me realize it may indeed be possible to knit into the same stitch twice! Heresy! In normal knitting, you can't work the same stitch twice. In the video, I show you how this doesn't work. Speci...

Grafting Heresy

First off, I must apologize for being offline for so long. I had a fabulous time teaching ten classes at Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair. I met lots of wonderful students. I even had 17 people in one class! I've never had that happen before. Unfortunately, somewhere in all the fun I picked up a nasty intestinal virus and have been sick for three weeks. The first two weeks consisted of very little eating and as much drinking of water as I could manage. I even ended up in the emergency room at one point. In weeks two and three my stomach started to get better, but then my head got worse and I had to fight migraines. This third week I've been able to eat and drink more comfortably, so I'm working my way back up to my regular diet. I eat something close to Paleo diet, so lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and some meat in appropriate (4 ounce) portions. Of course, all that roughage is harder to digest, so it is taking me awhile. Being nauseated for days on end has greatly improve...
