We have two swatches for this class. The first swatch is the one we will use for
most of class. The homework sets up a nice hemmed cast-on.
Homework swatch for hem/provisional:
- Using contrasting waste yarn (white in picture) and needle one size smaller than what you would normally choose, cast on 20 stitches.
- Work a few rows in stockinette to establish waste tab.
- RS: Work a right-side row using a second slippery contrasting waste yarn such as crochet cotton or dental floss (orange in picture).
- Join project yarn (blue in picture). WS: purl. RS: knit. WS: purl.
- RS: purl (to create fold line).
- Change to normal-size needle — WS: purl. RS: knit. WS: purl.
- Project part of fabric is 7 rows tall = 3 rows + fold line + 3 rows (blue in picture).
- Leave live on needles.
Variation: If you’d prefer a picot hem instead (not pictured),
- on the fold line RS: k1; repeat (yo, k2tog); end with k1 on the orphaned last stitch. One stitch increased.
- Decrease away the extra stitch on the next row.
This second swatch is so we can graft in pattern.
- Using waste yarn (white in picture) in size similar to project yarn, cast on 12 stitches.
- Knit back and forth in 2×2 rib for about an inch.
- RS: Work one row in slippery waste yarn (orange in picture) in pattern — use crochet cotton or dental floss.
- Tie on project yarn (blue in picture) and work in 2×2 rib for several inches. Swatch should be long enough to wrap around so you can graft the end to the beginning as if making a bracelet.
- RS: Again work one row in slippery waste yarn in pattern.
- Again knit back and forth in 2×2 rib for about an inch.
- Leave live on needles.
