Please make two swatches with live stitches ready to go in class.
With class yarn and appropriate needles, cast on 24 stitches and work back and forth a few rows to establish stockinette fabric (RS knit, WS purl).
With class yarn and appropriate needles for working in the round, cast on an even number of stitches and establish a few rounds of 1×1 ribbing.
(My second swatch is only 24 stitches in the round on a magic loop. Cast on more stitches if it is easier for you.)
