Oops! Now What Do I Do? homework

Your homework swatch will have four sections from left to right containing: cables, moss stitch, garter stitch, and stockinette stitch and a four-stitch wide garter-stitch border. Practice in class will be easier if you use worsted or larger yarn and if that yarn tends not to split. Working stitches loosely (go up a needle size or two if necessary) will also help. You will also be inserting a couple mistakes we can fix in class. In the “Pattern rows” directions below, the semi-colons indicate the break between each section. You may want to employ stitch markers when you work.

(Edges on sample were worked by knitting the first stitch of each row through the back of the loop and slipping the last stitch of each row purlwise with yarn in front. This is optional. If you choose to do it, then rows begin with k1-tbl, k3 and end with k3, sl1-pw-wyif instead of beginning and ending with k4.)

Abbreviations:
k = knit    p = purl
c4f = cable 4 front — i.e. cross 2 stitches over 2 stitches so that the cable leans left; the 2 stitches held on the cable needle will be held in front
c4b = cable 4 back — i.e. cross 2 stitches over 2 stitches so that the cable leans right; the 2 stitches held on the cable needle will be held in back

Cast-on 52 stitches. (Sample was crocheted cast-on, but you can do what you like.)
Work 4 rows garter stitch — i.e. knit every row.
Odd-numbered rows are right side.

This homework swatch is for the “fancier” version of this class, which is what I typically teach for guilds and festivals. If you are taking the 2 hour version called “Fixing Mistakes,” the homework is:
2 swatches.
Cast on 20 stitches and work stockinette for an inch or two. Leave live on needles.
Cast on 20 stitches and work garter stitch for an inch or two. Leave live on needles.
(Note, you can use a smaller needle or stitch holders to park your live stitches.)
